What is Communities in Schools (CIS)

Communities in Schools (CIS) is a program that is offered in all Lewis County Schools. Each site coordinator serves a different purpose at their schools based on what the school needs.

Here at Lewis County High School, CIS provides schoolwide programs that are geared towards improving our attendance, providing basic needs, promoting positive school culture, and building positive relationships with students and their families!

Goals

Our #1 goal is supporting our students, CIS works with students to:

  • Improve Attendance

  • Increase Students' positive experience at school

Support

CIS is works all year long with our students through many different support areas. Just a few of those areas include:

  • The Care Closet (clothing, hygiene items, snacks, and school supplies)

  • Jasper the Therapy Dog

  • Transition to High School

  • Community Block Party

  • All in for Me Awards

  • Homecoming/Prom Dress Events

  • Weekend Backpack Program

  • Mental Health Referrals

Visit our Lewis County CIS page, to learn more about our program County Wide.

Partners

We couldn't support our students without the help of some amazing Partners in our community. We want to thank the following Partners:

  • Lewis County FRN

  • Camden Family Health

  • Mountain CAP ABC Program

  • Our Neighbor

  • Weston Rotary

  • Alice's Kids

  • United Way

If you would like to join in supporting our program and students please reach out to our site coordinator.

Jasper

Jasper, The Therapy Dog

Jasper joined the Lewis County High School family in 2022. She was trained by Ultimate Canine In Indianapolis before her debut at our school. Lewis County was the first High School in the State to receive a therapy dog under the state's new Friends with Paws program.

During school you can find Jasper where you see our students. Students can be seen playing ball, petting her, or watching her perform her tricks. Jasper provides a great tool for our school for mental health when students just need a little something different outside our staff services.

How we do it

Mrs. Sarah Linger, our site coordinator provides support for the entire school surrounding our two goals. She also promotes and provides communication between parents, schools, and the community. Mrs. Linger works individually with students to provide extra support where needed and to help them succeed in school and life.
