Good morning, I have been told that there has been some concern among parents about a 15 punch bathroom rule that is in use at the middle school. This rule is in place with the 7th grade team. Teachers in the 7th grade posted the following message in their classes on Schoology to explain the rule. I figured I would post the explanation here to alleviate any further confusion. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to call the school or contact a 7th grade teacher through Schoology. Expectations regarding bathroom breaks: They are given a pass with ten punches per quarter. They are allowed to go during homeroom, advisory, lunch, afternoon homeroom and most vocational classes without getting the card punched. This is to prevent frequent flyers from missing too much of their core classes for bathroom breaks. Parents can rest assured that no teacher will prevent a student with a bathroom emergency/urgency from going to the bathroom.

Today we practiced an evacuation drill for the school. Then Mrs. Benson, our seventh grade Science teacher, had a HUGE surprise for all of us, a flyover to celebrate the opening weeks of school and to promote the amazing opportunities in aviation in North Central WV. Video and more pictures will be coming later. You can also watch the TV coverage on WBOY tonight as well as read about the event in the Weston Democrat. It was a great day to be a Patriot and it has been an amazing start to the school year.

(6th grade old section, 7th grade new section, 8th grade new section) C. Students must raise their hand to be given permission to get out of their seat. Bathroom Expectations -1 person at a time out of class. (If the teacher does a whole class bathroom break the teacher must monitor students in the hall). -Students may not go to the bathroom during transition times (to and from lunch, between classes, before homeroom or at the end of the day). Reason (Students need to report to class and sign in and out so that the teacher knows where they are at all times). -Leave classroom and go straight to the bathroom-use designated bathroom. Explain where the designated bathrooms are. Art Room uses the vocational bathrooms, Gym uses the gym bathroom, Music, Band and Choir bathroom by office. 6th grade bathroom by office. Classes from the elevator to the end of the 2nd floor wing use the old 5th grade bathrooms. 2nd Floor from elevators to Library use the 7th and 8th grade bathrooms and Library students will use the 7th and 8th grade bathrooms. Reason (Saves time, you don’t miss instruction, the teacher needs to know where you are at times). -If the bathroom is busy wait outside or return to class. Reason (Student doesn’t miss too much instruction time and students have less chance to get into trouble). -Use bathroom and wash hands with soap. Use appropriate amount of materials and dispose of them properly. Reason (So, the bathroom remains clean and safe for everyone). -In the bathroom be respectful of the space, other peers and yourself. Reason (Everyone deserves privacy in the bathroom). -Clean up after yourself. Reason (Everyone deserves a clean bathroom that has the needed supplies). -Leave bathroom promptly. Reason (Other students can use the bathroom, less learning loss and less chances to get into trouble). -Return to class without stopping anywhere else including other teachers. Reason (Student is then not disrupting other classrooms or missing important instruction). -Get a quick drink if needed. Reason (So that student misses less instruction or work time). -Alert the teacher with needs in the bathroom-toilet paper and soap or if there is another issue. Quietly without interrupting instruction. -Alert the closest teacher immediately if there is a fight or someone is taking a picture or video, medical emergency, or water flooding in the bathroom. -Alert your teacher quietly without interrupting instruction if there is a need for supplies. We are excited to welcome back all our Patriots to the 2023-2024 school year. We hope you have had a relaxing and restful summer. We have worked this summer to make this year the best school year possible. We are looking forward to sharing all our hard work with our students and their families. I want to take this time to answer a few questions. The doors will open at 7:20 this school year. Bell for first period will ring at 8 with a tardy bell ringing at 8:02. Parent drop offs will follow the same procedure as years past where you will drop off students at the crosswalk in front of the building. Please do not drive through the bus lane beside the building. This is a hazard for buses, cars, and most, importantly, our students. The day will end at 3:01. Walkers and parent pickup will be released at approximately 3:12. We have new backpacks full of school supplies ordered for our students. As soon as they arrive, all students will receive one. The planners that your students will be receiving will contain the student handbook with all our rules and regulations. As soon as the schoolwide expectations have been presented to our students, we will be sharing them with parents. These expectations discuss proper classroom, cafeteria, bathroom, assembly, and hallway behaviors as well as a review of important rules from the handbook. We will be having a spirit day on Friday, August 25th to celebrate our first full week of school. We will be asking our students to wear a shirt color based on their grade level. Sixth grade will wear red, seventh grade will wear white, and eighth grade will wear blue. We look forward to great year of growing and learning. Can’t wait to see our Patriots bright and early on Monday morning, August 21st.

It is hard to believe we are already preparing for the 2023-2024 school year but we are. If you are currently enrolled with Community Care, the medical clinic is offering free sports physicals on Tuesdays for the remainder of the school year. All you need to do is fill out the parent portion of the official WVSSAC physical form and have your student bring it with them to school. One less thing to worry about and very convenient.
